If I restrict my answer to only those singer songwriters who play acoustic guitar I would say (in no particular order):

Jackson Browne
James Taylor
Eric Clapton
Pete Townsend
Keith Richards
Lowell George
George Harrison
Paul McCartney
John Lennon

A name that hasn't been mentioned here is Jimmie Spheeris. Solid acoustic player who worked with Richie Havens and who loved different guitar tunings.

I've also been inspired by Neil Finn, who besides being one of the best songwriters around, plays a real sweet acoustic. Check out his solo versions of some of his songs like Fall At Your Feet.

Was thinking about this very question the other day and think my influences come from everyone I've ever listened. With that said, I'd say the most influential have been Willie Nelson, Gordon Lightfoot, Steve Earle/Townes Van Zandt, Steve Goodman, Stephen Stills, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Mark Knopfler, Emmy Lou Harris and Bruce Springsteen.

There were three songs that I really loved because of the acoustic guitar. They were, in chronological order, "Leaves That are Green", "Helplessly Hoping" and "The Boxer". I used to wish I could play the guitar part for those songs. Now I can. Not note for note like the originals, but my way and I have fun playing those songs that meant so much to me.

With that in mind:

Paul Simon
Crosby, Stills and Nash

These were my original influences and inspiration.

Refreshing to see Blake Mills in the list, since the majority of the names indicates a fairly old demographic (don't flam, I'm part of the above 60 too)

Among the young guns, Blake Mills is a flabbergasting guitar player (on electric, tho)
