I have a one pager that I update every new year. It has songs that I know (both my own and others) that I would like to continue to play and improve upon. Then I have a list of the new songs that I am writing and want to finish. I have songs by others that I would like to learn, and I have a short list of new habits I would like to cultivate such as learning how to effectively practice with a metronome, learn some new grooves, etc.

I am usually able to cross at least a few things off as I accomplish them. But I think it serves as a motivational tool for me throughout the year as long as I remember to pull it out monthly and look at it!

Best and happy musical new year...

Jayne

Some great and thoughtful ideas here.

MC1, your posts always brighten my day. This is a great view of many New Year's resolutions going astray. Hilarious in this case.

Mine is to play almost all my songs along with the metronome when I practice and to double the number of open micable songs from about 10 to about 20. To make a song open micable I need to play it clean and tidy.

That means, I should be able to play simple songs and friends should enjoy them instead of covering their ears.
No matter how bad you are... if you can play at least one song... and someone knows what you are trying to play... then you are a better guitar player then 99% of the people in this world...

Hi Barry,
I'm promising to get back together with some of the guys I played with in the 70s and early 80s--fine friends and guitarists who've been off my radar too long.

Wish me luck.

So I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

I'm hoping to gain more skill, through lots of applied practice, in playing single strings instead of both strings of the octave courses on the 12-string, in order to incorporate harp-like arpeggios and kantele idioms into my guitar playing.

Since it is all too easy to SAY we are going to do a thing (i.e. New Year's resolution), maybe an ongoing thread in which we show that we are actually DOING the thing might be a good idea so we can each see each other's actual progress over the course of the coming year.

I suspect that those of us who are already going in some musical direction and say we intend to continue, might have an easier time of it because the momentum is already there. The most difficult part is getting start and keeping the momentum in the early stages until it starts to become daily habit and we start to see some improvement.
