Default Hand Stretch Help

I posted this in the other thread but im getting irritated trying to play this song correctly.

my PROBLEM is i cant reach when he moves from the 10th fret on E string down to the 7th fret and still hold the other chords (is that a bare chord minor position?)

and then forget it when he adds the pinky on the 12th fret on high E and then 7th on low E....
sorry if that doesnt make sense

any advice would be appreciated

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLy9Kmw6HMM

is it a matter of "working out" my finger stretch and it will eventually come?

Buy some different hands. Those fingers in the video are very long and flexible.

How far can you reach?

Do you have small hands...or do you think you're just not flexible?

just not flexible. if i crunch over and really stretch i can reach the note (it will sound iffy)

by doing mini stretching sessions will i become better at reaching those far notes? or am i stuck with what my creator gave me? (thanks mom)

How about your posture?

Try keeping your shoulder dropped...and your elbow as low as possible. It might help get your hand in a "better" position to make the reach.

Glad I could help! I have very small hands and can make that stretch...so I figured you could too.

Sometimes folks don't realize how interconnected your fingers/hands/wrists/elbows/shoulders are.

These are things that will become more obvious as you play guitar more andmore and as certain songs (like this one) push your limits of what you're comfortable doing.

I think I remember Leo Kottke telling some story about someone telling him how important relaxation is to playing/performing.

It's counter intuitive...but the more you TRY to make long stretches...the harder it is to make the stretch.

Believe it or not, repetition can improve flexibility. It is exactly like someone unfit (like me!!) trying to touch my toes. At first, you can barely get your hands past your knees.

But with daily practice, *slowly* extending each time, you will get there.

Hands are the same. The muscles and ligaments need to be *gradually* stretched out over time. Constant practice is the key. As mentioned above - relaxing is also the key. Less tension in the muscles means they will be more supple.

Be careful not to overdo it. Never stretch to the point where it becomes painful. Know your limits and work up slowly.

Best of luck. I am sure you will get there.
