Default Opinions sought - string action etc

For many years I used D'ad EJ19 "Bluegrass" gauge strings, but found the G too light. Then I discovered that EJ17s were cheaper, even if I had to buy extra B & E - done this for years now.

Recently I thought I'd try the EJ17s "straight" and rather liked the thicker tone, but not the effect on my soloing speed.

I have my guitars set up to give me .080" at the 12th (top e) and ............so this is my query - could I get the same playability using medium B&E but set at a lower action?

And if so what should I lower the action on the .017 b & .013 e to?

Any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.
