Default An old guitar finds a cool new home...

A few months ago I said goodbye to an old friend - a guitar I'd owned for more than 35 years. It's a 1980ish Mountain M-37, a Japanese knockoff of a D-28. Been in a closet unplayed for at least 34 of those 35 years. It was in such good shape you'd swear that it was sealed in a time capsule all that time. When I took it to my luthier to be checked out he said the neck is still in great shape and all the guitar needed was a little bit of action adjustment.

Since I retired a couple years ago and started playing I've bought seven guitars and sold five as my herd has evolved. The old Mountain stayed in the closet unplayed, which more and more seemed like a crime. So I contacted the teacher I'd taken some lessons from and told him I'd like to give the guitar to some deserving student who was guitarless. He jumped at the opportunity and I stopped off at his studio to give him the guitar last February.

Last night he told me who ended up with the guitar - a construction worker who was blinded by a severe injury on a job site. As this guy rebuilds his now sightless life his friends encouraged him to take up guitar playing. My teacher said he would be happy to give him some lessons. The guy said he'd love to give it a try but there was one problem – he didn't have a guitar. My teacher said no problem I've got one for you right here. And he gave him my old guitar.

Can't think of a better new home for that old friend...

Fantastic! I have given away many instruments. It is somehow more satisfying than selling them.

Good for you!

Does that old guitar sound as good as it looks?

So good to see things work out like that.

The only shame of it is that he'll not be able to enjoy how great that guitar looks.

But i'm sure his ears will double the appreciation for it over time.

I remember seeing a CF Mountain guitar long time ago and it was a very good sounding guitar. Is that one all solid wood construction?

Well played. It doesn't get much better than that.

That is the feel good story of the day.
I have often thought that death would be preferred over blindness.
And this guy is learning to play the guitar.
My hat is off to both of you!

Great thing to do. Gryphon used to, and probably still does, accept instruments for the local VA hospital. No reason for guitars to languish in closets unplayed.
