Default NGD Huss and Dalton Custom 000 12 fret

NGD, well, actually a week ago I received my new Huss and Dalton Custom 000 12 fret. It is figured Honduran Mahogany back and sides with a thermo cured Adirondack Spruce top. I wanted to spend some quality time with it before posting.

It arrived last Monday (12/07/2020) morning about 11:00.
I let it acclimate and unboxed it Tuesday morning….It is STUNNING!
The character in the Honduran Mahogany back and side set is gorgeous.
The stain I requested is beautifully done and exceeds what I had hoped for.
The “thermo cured” Adirondack top is beautiful with clean straight grain.
The EIR binding and the B/W/B purfling are a perfect compliment to the stain color. Weighs in at 3.8lbs.

Set up (requested low) is very nice, 5/64" at the low E and just under 4/64" at the high E. …with no buzzing.
Very easy to fret up and down the neck…not that I get past the 5th fret all too often

Saving the best for last...The tone, OMG!
This guitar responds to the lightest touch and sings out.
It takes strumming very well, like it were a larger body guitar, clear, crisp and loud!

Beautiful overtones and sustain that do not get muddy.
The bottom end is deep but not overly boomy. The mids are full/scouped and chimey. Right now the highs are a little tight but ring out without any zing. This guitar is better balanced than any guitar I have ever played. Each string is as responsive and loud as every other one. I cannot put into words just how beautiful it sounds! As the Adi opens up, it is only going to get better, if that is possible.

I want to thank Steve and Molly at Down Home Guitars in Frankfort, IL for their help and patience in helping me pick out the wood set and dial in all of the details for this beautiful build. They truly are professionals with a passion for what they do.

Sorry the photos are sideways...I do not know how fix that...
NOW FOR SOME EYE CANDY!

That is an inviting looking guitar. Congrats.

Did you ask for a lighter stain on the mahogany, or is that just the nature of that wood?

I asked for a stain that is a little different than the usual Mahogany color. I think it came out great.

Congrats on your new friend. Play it in the best of health.
This summer, on a lark, I bought the EIR cousin of your guitar from Guitar Center. Mine is short scale and SP Deluxe. Frankly, I knew the name, but not much more. With a liberal return policy, there was no risk. Not that it mattered. Like you, I was immediately seduced by the looks and voice of this guitar. I have boxes by Larrivee, Bourgeois and Froggy Bottom. And the H&D is the one I reach for most. Like, every day. Just feels right. Smells heavenly. Just sounds right. And, Lord knows, it just looks right. The top is the prettiest, without question, of all the guitars I own. Though it does not meet the FB level of fit and and finish.
When I got mine I inquired about strings, and the usual suspects were recommended. I put on my favorites - DR Rares - and they were good. But someone suggested Thomastik 10-41 extra lights. I had concerns playing such lights strings. But the suggestion was spot on. Those strings are really wonderful, especially with finger style. They are good to go, without any break-in time. They have a dry, sweetness that sounds almost classical. As a recent guitar devote learning barre chords, these light strings on a short scale, are like training wheels. I have had one set on for about three months and they seems to be aging very well. I had my teacher play the guitar and he was surprised that such light strings could generate the volume they did. Curious to see how they would work on the Froggy Bottom, I mounted them on the H12. Nope. Not good at all. Not any where near enough to drive that top. A very interesting "science experiment," though not cheap.
Again, congrats on your purchase. Nobody doesn't love H&D guitars, and I think you will soon discover why.
David

That’s a beauty! Congrats. Nothing like a 12 000 in my book. Likely to make playing guitar and making music even more fun this year. Enjoy.

I have a set of Thomastik 11-52 Spectrum strings waiting to go on next. I used these on my (now sold) H&D T-00 14 with wonderful results. I am hopeful they will be the perfect fit for my 000-12 fret.
