Default TAYLOR 310ce DILEMA!

Hey, I'm from Australia and in the market for a new acoustic.

Basically, I mostly play finger style but do some light strumming every now and again. There is a second hand Taylor 310ce that i can get for around $1600. It plays really great but it's a dreadnaught and I always wanted the Grand Auditorium shape.. Over here It would cost me another $500 to buy a new 314 taylor. Alternatively I heard the Martin performing artist series is good value? Thoughts?

You're asking for personal opinions, since there is no right answer to this question. For me, if what I wanted to do is to mostly sit around on my couch and play fingerpicking songs, a dread would be the last shape I'd be interested in. My first pick would be a grand concert or grand auditorium. They are far more comfortable to hold and easier to play.

It's my first time in this forum, really appreciate your help.

I don't know much abut currency in AUS compare to US....but wouldn't US dealer be able to ship you one and still cost less than $1600 for somthing like 414ce???

I would get me 414ce over 314ce but that's just me.

I don't even play finger style as I'm mainly a strummer and still prefer the GA body over Dread.

With all do respect to Dread owners and lovers, I never ever see me getting a dread in my future. Way uncomfortable and ugly if you ask me.

TheTaylor will likely be brighter. Too many variables to answer your questions. You should play a few and see which you prefer. For me, between those two, it would be the Martin.

Hey Eden, welcome to the Forum. Although you'll save $ on the 310ce, I'd go with the 314ce based on what your wrote. If you don't need the cutaway or electronics, you can save a few hundred by getting a GA3.

Do you have the option to play the Martin?

Speaking from experience - don't go for the dreadnought. It's too unbalanced when strummed and the volume of the fingerpicking compared to strumming is too significant. They're fantastic for flatpicking but otherwise you'll regret it. I'm speaking from experience as a 410 and later 814 owner - see my posting history for more details.

Get the 14 series or a GC. There are used ones in your price range.
