Default headstock binding

Another design element that we agreed on was this headstock binding that Nick used on Mike's (4mykey) OM:

The build thread for that OM is here:

https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=592250

We thought that it goes well with the developing Art Deco theme.

While Nick was building other guitars, he’d have moments of downtime — waiting for glue to dry — and he set about working on the rosette.

Default more rosette..

You'll notice a bit of Nick's blood on one of the lower ivory triangles... Nick puts himself into every guitar he builds!

Meanwhile, I bombarded Nick with ideas, sketches, questions and suggestions — all while the poor guy was busy building guitars.
Nick is an incredibly patient person, his responses were alway very considered. His manner reminded me of my experience in art school. In studio class the better instructors could look at a work in progress, find what was working in it (and what wasn’t) and then through questions and comments, a direction for improving would emerge for the student. In our exchanges, Nick somehow enabled me to better develop my own ideas, and between the two of us we refined the designs.

This is not to say that every idea I had was a good one. Ocassionally Nick would have to put his foot down: “Please don’t make me put that on a guitar!”

I'm very eager to see how this build develops!

I played a Franklin at Luthiers Collection back in 2014. It was the second best guitar I played that day and I have been itching to get on Nick's build list for quite some time ever since. I will live vicariously through you and others!

I love the fact that you are going for his hand rubbed 'burst! Keep the pictures coming!

Give Nick a call, there's no time like the present!

Nick's sunburst is quite beautiful -- it really enhances the grain of the top.

My 2011 Franklin Dread

Default More rosette

Blood removed!

After completing the ivory/ebony design, Nick lines the interior with ivoroid. (I imagine it was a pushpin that drew blood)

Difficult to see in the photo, but there is now a thin white/black line around the outside of the rosette.

Hahahaha... You are a bad influence. Unfortunately, my current priorities will not let me invest in another boutique guitar. But, I haven't given up hope for a Franklin yet!

I totally agree! If (when?) I commission a guitar with him, I'd definitely have a sunburst. Do you know if he does a full body 'burst? I've only seen pictures of his guitars with the top receiving the 'burst treatment.

I’ve never seen one that is a full body sunburst, but I don’t see why Nick couldn’t do one — although his method is to use dye directly on the unfinished wood (which is why it doesn’t mask the grain), so I don’t know how that would work on a dark wood like mahogany or rosewood. Maybe a maple guitar, or another light colored wood? I’ll have to ask him the next time I speak with him!

Thanks! I like it! It was quite a time consuming chore to construct it; Nick took it apart and started over a couple of times until he was happy with the results.

Originally Nick planned to use this German Spruce from 1970,

but when he started to sand it down he discovered a large pitch pocket, so instead he decided to use some German Spruce from the same 1968 batch he used when building Bob's (iim7V7IM7) German/Cuban mahogany OM.

It had some oxidation on the edges, similar to the piece he used for the German/Cuban mahogany OM, but, like that top, between some bleaching and sanding the stains disappeared.
