Talking NGD - Larrivee O-40R Sunburst Special

I'm back in the Larrivee fold after a few years of not owning one. I bought this O-40R Sunburst Special from a forum member (JCsguitars). We live close to each other so we could do an in-person transaction. The seller was great to deal with. The guitar is in pristine condition and sounds great! It has a few custom upgrades: pyramid bridge, sunburst, and moon spruce top.

Parlor owners: what strings do you like on yours? I'm going to experiment with several types/brands but would like to hear from you.

(I used his picture because mine was sideways and I couldn't correct it.)

I like 13-56 on my parlors.

Not me playing but I like the sound with the medium strings.

Nothing heavier than .12 (.12-.54) for me... and typically custom lights (.11-.52)... way back when I'd do medium gauge, but the more I saw guitars start to buckle with age, the less inclined I was to use mediums.

That's just me, though.

Congrats once again. I’ve had my P03 for a couple of years. Exact dimensions and scale length (24”) as your 0-40. I use nothing but mediums with such a short scale. I find PB sound best. I just had monels on it for a couple of months and they just didn’t work for mine. Yesterday I put Curt Mangan round core 13-56 PB on it and it sounds and plays great. Have fun.

Congrats! The Larrivee 40 series is home run, IMO. I recently bought a used OM-40R and it's phenomenal. Enjoy yours.

I have one of those as well. I think those are one of the most underrated guitars currently out on the market. Really high quality guitar.

I have an 0 sized parlor guitar and generally use 12s, but 11s work for light fingerpicking.

My current favorite strings are Martin MA540T but I've used Martin Retros as well on my parlor. Half the fun is trying a few brands and compounds.

Congrats on your new acquisition! I love the Larrivee 40 series, having four different variations of SD-40. The fingerstyle tone I get out of the moonwood tops is hauntingly beautiful as well. My all-hog SD-40 has a sunburst similar to yours.

I don't own a Larrivee parlor, but of the parlors I've tried and/or owned, I've had good results with medium/lights as well as medium gauge strings.

Loved the Larrivee parlor I had. Sitka and maple and a little beauty. Had it many yrs and would likely still have it if not asked for it in a trade for a Santa Cruz PJ. Used mediums on the Larrivee. Would love to use mediums on the PJ too but Mr Hoover told to stick with lights. Beautiful guitar. Enjoy.

Jeff
