Default String sounded like it broke, but only detuned??

I just received a steel string guitar that was shipped to me, and all of the strings were detuned for shipping. As I was tuning the high E string, it was almost to tension when I heard a "twang". I thought for sure the string broke, but it was just loose again, as though I had rotated the tuner back several rotations. I was able to tune it right back up with no problem.

Can someone suggest what might have happened? Is there something I should examine? Nut & bridge appear to be fine. Should I loosen the string and pull out the peg?

Thank you!

The end pin may have pulled out just a bit. Take a look at that.

The string was not seated properly up against the bridge pin. When you added tension to it by tuning p it suddenly popped up against the bridge plate. It's always a bit of a shock when that happens!
