Exactly. Sounds like a real knock on my new Recording King.
It is a zero, zero, zero? Well OK. But I kinda like it.

This multiple zeros business is used for wire gauges as well, among other things. For instance AWG sizes range from 40 (thinnest) to 0000 (fattest). The multiple zero sizes can also be written as 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 (0000). You could talk about your classic Martin 3/0-15M.

It always seemed to me like a slight failure of imagination: "This here #1 wire is as thick as we'll ever need ... well, maybe not."

And how about negative numbers instead of piles of zeros? Instead of that 000 guitar, how about a -2? And dreads would be -3 or maybe -4 (since there are 0000's). How does your new (-3)-28 sound? The D Jr is 15/16 of a dread, so it's a -3*15/16 = -2.8125 Jr.

The mind boggles and I am short on sleep.

Too funny this thread is. I remember writing code and we would use "Ø" to distinguish zero from "O" the "Ø" was the zero. Ever since, out of habit, when handwriting still use the "Ø" for a zero. LOL grew up on a farm as well so def heard "Double-Ought(Aught) " term used a lot. I believe both words are incorrect and in no way mean 0, should really be Naught=Zero. But, who cares though right. LOL
Cheers!
Happy Fourth Weekend Everyone!

it's probably a copy write thing with Martin owning it and other companies technically not being able to say 000 or 00 or 0. Even though martin has been using it so long the expression's now are a standard for body sizes. Other Companies using the letters "OOO" may get them out of copy
write lawsuits possibilities. Either way we all now what is meant when Someone say's OOO or 000 or triple Oh My Goodness gracious me! LOL that's a good day then.

FWIW, since your post was partly in jest (and also I have an uncontrollable habit to write about intellectual property and distinctions thereof), it would most like like be a trademark, rather than copyright. A word and/or name cannot be copyrighted. A copyright usually applies to a work and allows the creator to find relief demo unauthorized usage, while a trademark is set up to protect the consumer and prevent confusion in the marketplace. It is to ensure that the consumer is getting a real Martin or Taylor, no other companies named Taylor or Martin should ba able to build and sell guitars and possibly any musical instruments under those names (in the US).

All that said 000 is probably not trademarked just as dreadnaught is not trademarked for a variety of reasons, one being that other companies were using the 000 designation before Martin or that Martin could not prove they were the first to use it, etc., etc.

Exactly! You posted this before I could. "Triple Oh" is easier to say than "Triple Zero," and while the preferred usage at C.F. Martin & Co. is "Triple Aught," to me saying a word like "aught" would be an affectation.

My late great-uncle in Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Sedgwick Simons, was born in the 1890's and words like "aught" sounded a lot more natural coming out of his mouth than they would coming out of mine. (Yes, I actually had an Uncle Sedgwick, though we usually called him "Uncle Seddie" for short...hey, it's an old Southern family, what can I say?)

Short version: I pronounce it "Triple Oh" and write it "Triple O," not 000. If anybody wants to get all wound up, be peeved and have kittens over my shameless misuse of Martin terminology, knock yourself out. Or skip my posts, your choice. I won't be revising how I write or say it, either one.

Maybe triple zee could be the new slang.

Triple zed or triple zeta for our European friends.

I think it's likely pronouncing it "triple oh" came about just as a verbal abbreviation of "triple zero" since the second syllable of the word "zero" is pronounced "oh."

But I agree with those who said this isn't really something about which to get worked up.

Sorry but I guess it was a little ambiguous. Where I am, when something sounds ridiculous we call it a Donald Trump.
