Default NGD - fat necked "Gibson" (ish)

I've had a couple of Martins... first, a 2013 HD-28, and now a D-28
1931 Authentic. Both guitars have so much going for them, I
can't think of a single bad thing to say about either of them.
I also have a 57 Country Western. It is the one I pull out to
play most of the time. I like the 57 Country Western so much.
I've about given up trying to quantify it, I think maybe I just
like Gibsony guitars more than ones that are like Martins...?
I sure do like the big wide neck on the D-28 1931 Authentic, though.
There's a lot of Gibsony guitars out there with wider and bigger
necks than the 57. Stupid GAS...

I've been looking at the 1940 J-35 for sale here in the
Classifieds, I bet it is awesome, and I bet I'd really like
its neck... I don't know why it is still unsold. I can't imagine
it staying unsold long enough for my guitar slush fund to
build up enough to snag it, though...

There's a lot of other fish in the sea... and the places where
those fish are for sale are getting all listed out in the
"Must visit Guitar Shops in the USA" thread. I've been
inventory browsing at the web sites of the different shops as they
get mentioned in the must-visit thread. Kopp makes really
good Gibsony guitars, and I'll bet that Iris guitars are very
good, but they're both hard to find. I saw an Iris DF at TNAG in
Nashville, but "poof", it was gone. As I visited the different shop
sites, I found and got stuck on this "used" 2016 Kopp AJ with Madagascar
rosewood at Acoustic Music Works. It showed up at my house today ...

The neck feels great, and it is so nicely bound. The guitar
reeks of good workmanship. And it's beautiful, too.

I hope I've found my fat-necked "Gibson"...

-Mike

In the past I have always been a Martin only guy. Every time I would play a Gibson it just didn’t do it for me. All of that changed when I got my Historic 36 AJ. Because of that guitar I don’t even own a Martin anymore. I’ve been fully converted. I’ve heard so many good things about Kopp guitars. Another great Gibson style guitar builder is Fairbanks. I’m saving my pennies to hopefully one day buy a SJ Kalamazoo Gal model of his (going to take awhile though thanks to the price of Brazilian, but will be well worth it)

Congrats on your new Kopp AJ !

I love his alcohol rubbed sunbursts...some of the best in the business, imo, and yours is a beauty.

As far as Martins go, I've owned plenty, currently don't own any. My favorites so far have been the D-18A 1937 and 000-18A 1937. Nice full size C to V necks on both and the best necks Martin has ever carved, again imho. The skinny MLO/PA neck they insist on putting on most of their line today is a deal breaker for me. I'm very picky when it comes to neck profiles. Maybe if I had started playing as a teen I'd be more adaptable, but now that I'm middle age and set in my ways, that ain't happening.

Enjoy your new Kopp!

It's not fat like the d-28 Authentic, which is about like a classical ...

I took the caliper (in inches) to the nut and 1st or 2nd fret string spacing on the
Country Western and the Kopp...

nuts: 1.71 vs 1.77
string spacings: .277 vs .302

The neck on the Kopp "feels" big, I guess it is fatter or bigger in some dimension
I didn't measure? I was using a capo on both guitars yesterday, so I was
down the neck with the capo on 2, 3 and 4...

The difference in string spacing is something you feel right away if you play
the guitars back-to-back.

Because of that guitar I don’t even own a Martin anymore.

That needs to be me ...

As an old retired guy, I don't have any bidness keeping this in a case in
the closet...

Mike, you are walking in tall cotton with a '40 J35 and a Madagascar Kopp AJ! I have only played a handful of Kevin's guitars, but they were all fantastic.

Medium height cotton ... I have a 57 Country Western and the Kopp...
the really nice 1940 J35 is out of my reach and still in the classified section
here.

A 39 J 35 was the best acoustic I've ever played, and maybe the biggest neck too. Oh, but the tone......
