Default 12 string for a Newbie

I fancy a 12 string to add to my collection.
Tried a Guild F2512 and a Yamaha LL16-12.
Really like the Yamaha seems a lot of guitar for the money.

Cant find anything else local, but other options available online at the same price point are the Martin DXE2E-12 or a Faith Saturn. Tempted by the Martin from a playability point of view (my OOO-RS1 with stratabond neck i find a joy to play). Recording king also do a budget one in the dirty 30s range RDS9-12 i think

Any thoughts ?

To me, the Guilds are is the quintessential 12 strings.

Lots of people like the Taylor 12.

I have the 1512, for the money, it's a really good option.

It's loud and the pickup (Fishman Sonitone) does sound pretty good pluggeg in.

Comes with a pretty good semi-hard case.

You should plan to get it in for a good setup if this is the way you go.

Maybe a Takamine could be on the list. I believe that’s what The Eagles use on Hotel California when they play live.

Hi Neil, the Yamaha LL16-12 sounds like a great option, especially since you like it. I have the LL16 6 string and it's a wonderful guitar.

Seagull or Simon & Patrick - I'd check them out.

If you've got $1,000 to spend, I'd wait around for a used Guild JF30-12 in excellent condition to pop up on reverb or ebay.

Another option is the Seagull S12 which was well regarded on another 12 string thread. I have one "in the mail".

Casting a vote for a Takamine GJ72CE-12 string. They come in natural and sunburst finishes. Great value for these, and playability and sound are both excellent, not to mention Tak's phenomenal pickup system for plugged in sound.

Best of luck on your search.

Breedlove offers excellent playing and sounding 12 strings at several price points.

For the entry price the Yamaha is an excellent choice and a bit easier to play than some of the others. I prefer it over the low cost Taylors. The Chinese made guilds are fine instruments and the F1512 is the best low cost Jumbo 12 string around.

Higher on the budget are the solid wood Taylor 300 series and above. They are hard to find now.

Low cost Martin 12 strings sound better to me than the low cost Taylor 12 strings.

Truthfully there are many good options, but if you like the tone and the neck, the Yamaha LL16-12 is an excellent choice. I enjoyed mine until I traded up to an 800 series Taylor at the time. Not sure if the Yamaha might have actually sounded better.

I'm another who likes Guild 12-strings and my Seagull S6-12 as well, but if you like the Yamaha you've played, that's a strong recommendation for you.

I second this! The Takamine GJ72CE 12-string is a fantastic guitar!

I can't argue with that - a nice big jumbo 12er. I had one for a while and recorded this with it (took me about six months of practice to get it into recording shape!). (Note the low end is a bit weak though). Still, that was it -- after that I was totally motivated to get a US.-made Guild! I actually got this JF30-12 for under $1,000....

The Yamaha LL16-12 is an excellent 12-string for the cost!

Also, I think the Guild F-1512 is an excellent 12-string for a little bigger sound and a little more cost.

Best of luck!

Hi Folks,
I'm one of the moderators here, and hate deleting posts, so I wanted to post a friendly reminder of the policy of selling guitars on the forum. In order to keep the discussion forums from being overrun with sales posts, we have a dedicated classified forum for just that purpose. Rules are posted at the top of the "classified" forum room.

Please understand and do your best to stay in bounds, in order to maximize the efficiency of discussing topics (and selling/buying guitars) within their respective forums.
