Default How far are hammered dulcimer strings from breaking tension

Heard they last a long time. Are they stretchy?

Wire doesn't stretch. It slips when not seated correctly.

About 25 years ago I used to play out occasionally with a guy who owned a hammered dulcimer...

How far? Chronologically speaking, practically forever, provided they're not kept in unfavorable temperature/humidity conditions, nor subjected to unwarranted stress beyond their intended application - in other words, the same common-sense measures one would apply to any other wooden instrument...
