Default Paul Asbell

I was interested in the song played to demostrate a parlor in another thread and I thought I would research the artist (I purchased the tab for his song Chunky Monkey Gumbo) Chunky Monkey Gumbo soundclip

Here is his website:Paul Asbell

His music is laid back soft blues (my description of the songs that I listened to). I haven't listened to all of the sound clips from his cds, but I will. I'll be ordering his cds for sure.

I had a blues class with Paul at Swannanoa… great guy and fantastic player! I don't know if I'd describe his music as laid back blues. He can play just about any kind of blues or jazz.

Here's my favorite which he performed for the class…

PS… Wow, 10,000 posts, TB….

I am guessing the Chunky Monkey Gumbo demo you heard was on the John How guitar site. I found it a while back: love that song and the name.

Great player.

But "soft blues"??? Paul plays everything from bebop jazz to Chicago blues to Jerry Reed to Blind Blake.

Having met Paul and heard him play, I agree that he's a terrific player and a very nice guy.

He's also one of the most reasonable people you'll ever meet. I don't think I've ever seen him participate on this forum, but from time to time he'd take part on the guitar newsgroup RMMGA when I was still active on it.

There are no moderators on that newsgroup, and the flame wars can get downright vicious there. But I can recall a few times when Paul stepped in, calmed the waters and got people to stop acting like complete idiots when nobody else could.

Paul is something of a friend, though we see each other only once a year anymore. But a terrific player in many genres, as others have said. I have seen him also play Western Swing and fiddle tunes as well. And he knows as a lot about the music he plays, not just how to do it exceptionally well. Also, Paul is very knowledgeable about fine guitars and their makers. Few people have more to brag about and do it less.
