Late 70s Alvarez Yairi DY55?
Anyone know anything about one of these? Laminated back/sides?

Don't know about that specific model, but more than likely it is laminated back and sides.
Yairi laminates are two layers of the same tone wood. There is no cheap filler wood in between. You get the strength of a laminate guitar without sacrificing much tone. You can contact St. Louis Music and ask about that specific model. Here is a link.: http://alvarezguitars.com/about/st-louis-music/

I had a DY-51 and it was a wonderful guitar. The DY-55 should be similar in quality.

I still have a DY 57S that I bought new in 1977. Great sounding dread and easily holds its own with the Gibsons, Guilds and Martins that I have/have had.
As architype said, likely laminated B/S but with layers of the same tonewood. No fillers or crappy substitutions. And handmade to boot. Very underrated guitars. If it's in good shape, it should serve you well for many, many years and no need to feel sheepish when some of the higher-dollar instruments come out to play. |

I found a used Alvarez/Yairi DY-71, built in 1992, laminated Koa back and sides. Super tone and construction. They are very underated guitars. Good for us.

Most older Yairi guitars have laminate back and sides.
Looking at some old catalogs, I notice if the model has three digits it's all solid. Two digits, laminate. There seems to be little rhyme or reason to how they were numbered otherwise... DY was dread JY was jumbo CY was classical. But the numbers never made sense to me.

Yairi guitars are great values for the money. They are almost always in good shape as far as neck set is concerned.
