Default $3,000 for Martin, Taylor or Furch

Hi all, new member, first post! I’ve found this forum to be an incredible resource, and wanted to get some opinions.

I own a $600 Takamine GA and a $1400 Martin DC-PA4 Dreadnaught. I’ll be selling the Martin and looking at one of three new guitars in the $3k range:

Martin D-28
Taylor 714ce
Furch Yellow GA

One day I’m going to own the D-28 as my dread. Just a matter if it’s now or in a few years. I definitely want a GA as a second guitar with the different/brighter sound. I’m 50/50 finger style/flat picking. Looking for Rosewood body/spruce or cedar top. Definitely nothing smaller than a GA at this point, so 14 frets.

I’ve played the Martin and Taylor and both seem great. Haven’t gotten my hands on a Furch but all I hear are amazing things and the Yellow edition fits what I’m looking for tonally.

Thoughts on these from those who own? Any you think I’m missing in this range?

All plausible, but with respect, PLAY lots of guitars, unless of course the “brand” is
important to you.

Welcome Sven. Just get the D28 now and sort the rest out later.

Hah yes!

So I guess I need some thoughts on an OM in this range as my other guitar.

Personally, I went from a MMV Martin Dread, thinking that Martin sound was my preferred (which is was early on)

Then I sold that MMV, and thought I would go for a Taylor, but none of the Taylor's could live up to the tone in my head.

Then I came across Furch, and they were everything I wanted Taylor to be.

Furch has much better consistency in their build quality and sound just because there are much fewer of them built. They also radius the top so the harmonics jump out. Not to mention they use Alpine Spruce for the bracing which I find makes them much more responsive to touch and volume changes.

I would go try a HD-28 and never look back.

Furch Yellow, cedar over rosewood, GA, for the win!

Seriously, I love love love mine. It’s my daily smile-maker — whether I want to fingerpick softly or really dig in and make it ring out, the responsiveness and tonality are always there. As Shadowfox rightly mentions above, natural harmonics and resonance are so present, it’s just an absolute delight to play.

To sum up, I highly recommend it.

Thanks! You find that the cedar holds up to a heavier attack? I definitely wanted a bit of a different sound than the D-28 which is obviously a warmer tone. Wonder if the Cedar would actually make the Furch sound closer to the Martin (with the spruce top).

We might as well let you know what you are in for by joining this forum.

The REAL answer to your question is...

Martin AND Taylor AND Furch for $9,000.

That is just the beginning. A year from now, you will wake up one day and wonder why you have 10 or 12 guitar cases in your room. Where did they all come from?

This.

Not trying to discredit Furch, but I’ll share because not many people are aware of it. Furch uses a different fretboard ebony species (Diospyros ebenum/Ceylon ebony - less desirable due to lower hardness) than what Martin, Taylor and other makers have been using for a long time (Diospyros crassiflora/Gaboon ebony). Also african mahogany (Khaya) neck even on their high end models. Typical cost-cutting measures but doing it on their high end models is beyond comprehension imo. At least in the present day, Martin (40 series up) and Taylor (300 series up) don’t go down this path.

But again sound and playability should be the top priority. The rest, we as buyers should at least know what we pay for.

Or, another REAL answer: buy a Collings, a Santa Cruz, and a vintage Gibson…

Welcome to the Forum.

But let me try to be helpful….

Play lots of guitars! As you do, your sense of what you want will be refined, in regards to the woods and maker and size that gives you the tone you want, as well as helping you to identify the feel that is a good fit for your hands and body. All your preconceptions and beliefs about what you will get from a guitar may not guide you to the one that will be “just right”. But your experience will be a good guide.

And be prepared for your tastes to change as you continue on your guitar journey. A D-28 might be great for a while, but who knows if it will be great for you in 10 years? If you are playing the same music in the same way, it might still be the best for you. But you, your music, your technique…all might change, and carry you to something else. Time will tell.

No, the Furch cedar doesn't bring it closer to the tone of a Martin. A cedar top Furch is probably a little mellower than a spruce topped Furch (I have a cedar Yellow), but its not near the tone of a Martin (I have D-16GT). A Furch is closer to the tone of Taylor.

Get the D-28. You can circle back to the Taylor/Furch guitar later on.

Welcome to the forum too!
