The figures that you folks are throwing around make the cost of an Emerald https://emeraldguitars.com seem downright cheap...

Definitely a cork sniffer's poll when you consider that guitars costing more than $5000 represent less than 1% of all guitars sold. I've never been tempted to own a guitar over $5000, even though if I really wanted one I could find a way to afford it.

Considerably less than 5 grand- in fact, 5 grand might be the price of my entire inventory- and I'm pretty sure, 1 guitar can't match all 12 in sound or looks, regardless of it's price tag.

The most I’ve dropped on a single guitar was $2500 so by this poll I’m pretty low budget.

So in defense of the original cost ranges, the OP may have caused some confusion when he edited his original post. The original post contained this phrase:
Quote:
I may be fixin' to pay for a new build for a high-end boutique guitar.
My guess is the OP was originally not really interested in the sub-$5K breakdown because new builds for high end boutiques basically start at $5K and end at the limits of your imagination and pocketbook.

I think the spirit of the original poll was less "figure out all the different price brackets" and more "I'm considering spending high four figures to low five figures on a custom build, how many here have done so?"

The Most I ever spent was $2800 on a used J45 Custom Shop that is now my main gigging guitar, and seems to thrive on the abuse I give it

Like the current ad for DuckDuckGo! on TV says...

Got my Martin D-35 back in 1982. It was $870.00 back then.
Sense then, I have bought and sold over 12 guitars. I have never paid over $2,000.00 for any of them.

So far, 1700 for a D-18, which included tax and shipping.

I’d be in the “more than $10,000” club if I hadn’t been fortunate enough to snag my Bourgeois used…and in mint condition. Saved 40% off MAP. Free shipping and no tax (it was a private transaction with an AGF buddy). For me, used is the only way to go on the high-dollar stuff…

I selected "less than $5,000" because there wasn't a poll option for "way, way less than $5,000".

Actually if it were offered I'd check a box that said "Way, way less than $5,000 but still way more than I should have spent"

Default What's the most you've spent on a guitar?

LoL at everyone critiquing OP’s poll. Me thinks you missed the point.

I’ve spent over 10k myself. Not proud of it . I personally think it’s really diminishing returns over say 5k. Well at least 5k a few years ago. Prices are getting crazy now

I guess it was destiny for me then as my teacher always scolded me and called me a one-percenter.

Acoustics- between $750 (Taylor 150e-12) and $3100 (Martin HD-28)

Electrics- between $650 (Fender Nashville Deluxe Tele) and $2800 (Heritage H-535)

With others in between. I have no regrets- I have what I want and I'm happy. I feel that if I spent more than $5,000 on a single guitar, I would never play it for fear of damaging it. $3,000 seems to be my limit.
