I record frequently for sharing and practice sessions. Nothing is as critical as you hearing yourself playing back.

Yep, recording is pretty much an essential element to improving as a performer, though its not always flattering or kind. I find that I can hear and feel the notes when I am playing live, whether through the audio in the room or monitors, but I can't really truly hear my own music unless I am listening to a recording. It's the difference between being able to say, ya that was tight or technically well done, and being able to say ya I liked that, it sounded good.
