Default When you buy a used guitar from an individual, do you ask for a receipt?

I've bought several used guitars from individuals over the years. I get them from trusted sources or friends. Usually I hand them cash and they hand me the guitar - with no receipt or bill of sale. This is probably not the best approach. How do you guys handle this?

I pretty much always use Paypal if I'm not buying from a store, and then you automatically have a receipt/proof of purchase.

When selling any guitar over $500 I have 2 receipts, one for me and one for the purchaser. We both sign both. Both contain the words "as is" and "sale is final".

Agree, when buying or selling follow J-Doug's advice. Both buyer and seller sign and date both receipts and always include "as is condition and the sale is final, no refunds or exchanges".

Never did, but you are making me think about it.

(I am a trial lawyer, so if anyone tries to defraud me, well, en garde....)

Really, though, I think I would incorporate Doug's suggestion for higher value sales--as the seller. No real reason for the buyer to want all that "as is" verbiage. Buyer might rather have, "as represented in ebay advertisement."

I don't like receipts for anything bought face to face. Hand over money, hand over item, thank you and good bye.

I hadn't thought about it before reading your post but I have not asked for or recieived receipts when buying and selling locally. It has always been cash with no receipts. The max sale has been just under $2k. The distance stuff has always been paid through PayPal.

I'll be curious to see what most people do. I'm already surprised that a few folks use receipts I'll definitley consider a receipt next time.

Thieves and fences LOVE selling musical instruments that way.

Since I have received 1099s for over 30 years for songwriting, I always get a receipt. For the taxman.

I've never asked for or received a receipt for a used guitar bought FROM AN INDIVUAL.

I suppose my "email trail" could serve as a receipt, if required.

Yes. I always request a receipt and I provide one to a buyer when I sell.

I've only bought a couple that were used... and only one did I get a receipt with...

In this day and age? I would definitely get a receipt with any major purchase...

I haven't generally thought about a receipt for private transactions as either a buyer or seller. It does seem like a good idea, though. There is almost always a paper trail of some sort, such as emails, but an actual receipt makes a lot of sense.

I have asked for a receipt for each as I have them delivered to Washington State and drive them across the border to BC where I live and may need it for customs.
