On some sets of pins the sizes (diameters) vary a slight amount. When one installs them they will stick out of the holes varying amounts. In order to level them one can ream the holes so all are even. Now the pins need to be installed in their fitted hole after string changes. Small groves can be filed across the diameter to mark the pins from 1 to 6. Some sets of pins are quite precise and do not require this treatment.
