After you stop playing and have to actually talk to a woman you need to be able to keep her interested or she will move on. That will either be something in your personality that is appealing, intelligence, humor, decent looks, (because let's face it, if Eric Clapton looked like the hunchback of Notre Dame it don't matter how great of a guitar player he is...she aint goin home with him)....well, EC is also rich, so she just might.

So, if it seems to be working for you, then you must have some other qualities that seal the deal....but playing and singing is a great ice breaker.

i can't shoot people with a guitar when i go to walmart..... so it keeps me from a lengthy prison term.
i have a decent capo but can't use it on a piano.
when i play it, the "Blonde"'s annoying toy cat runs and hides under the bed( as does anyone who's heard me play)
you cant make firewood out of a Tuba when you get frustrated with it.....
speaking of which, i've never seen a thread where someone bought a campfire piano....hmmm....
homeless buskers can store their wordly possesions in the soundhole when not in use.
Elvis wouldn't been "Elvis" with a clarinet in his hands.
guys with guitars are more intellectual than guys with Kazoos( with some exceptions)

I am actually shocked by many of the answers that I'm reading. Guitar is a means to an end.

What end is it a means to?

It really hinged on Bert Weedon, Hank Marvin and Alexis Korner. They spurred us Brit kids, and that spawned the invasion.

I would agree with you on that point, you really need to have other attributes other than just playing the guitar. I also happen to be a pretty good making interesting conversation, and I dress in a way that allows me to get noticed. Last night at this art function, I was the only one there wearing a hat! A straw fedora with a wide band. All the other guys were wearing dress shirts and slacks, but I was wearing a black T, imprinted with the star formations of the Milky Way, under a suede sport jacket, faded Levi's and western boots. Most of the attendees (men & women) had shorter hair styles. My hair is considerably longer. I get noticed and the ladies are always curious, as I was having red wine, instead of the beer...and copper framed teardrop sunglasses with fairly light colored tan lenses, so people can see my eyes. And I frequently approach women and break the ice with a complement! I'm polished with a lot of experience, with a good sense of humor, and occasional wry wit. And I listen to what the lady has to say, look into their eyes, without staring and that's how it's done.

Default never

never had luck with the ladies , motorcycle , fast car or guitar ...never tried to bs any either ...the guitar to me is a lifelong learning experiment which takes me to places nothing else can.....im the loner type ,,, tend to mind my own affairs , keep quiet- don't drink....but I do observe - im normal looking , not overweight or any other strange disfigurations , just tend not get involved.

Because they're cheap, versatile, and portable. They're cheap cuz they can be cranked out of factories fast and relatively easily unlike their classical cousins. The Beatles certainly must have had an effect but don't forget the early rockers like Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Elvis, Johnny Cash, etc...
