Default Re-stringing a slot head guitar..Thanks Andy !!!

So I wanted to put Elixer Nanowebs on my new Pono DS-20, not having much experience with slot head guitars I decided to check You Tube for any instructional videos...I came across Silly Moustache's videos showing how to do it. He has a two part video on the subject which goes into great detail and shows how to do it quickly like a pro, and end up with nice looking results...certainly worth a watch if you are one of the one's who just bought a slot head Pono !!! Thanks Andy !!

You can see the video here...be sure to watch the second video too...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUE3sJFnR70

After watching the video's, I had no problem re-string the Pono...came out looking great too !!

The first time is always a little iffy. I do mine while they are in a stand and I use a capo to hold the string in place while I trim it and bring it up to tension, releasing the capo along the way. This is one of the times I use a full Kyser.

I found that same video when I went to change strings for the first time on my DS20 and found it very helpful. I also installed a JJB 330 pickup system while the strings were off. I had to go to the local HD to pickup the smallest wire cutters and filed the sides of them down so they would fit into the slots without touching the wood when cutting the strings. First time it was nerve racking but came out fine because of that video.....

Well done video. Just be careful with those long sharp ends flopping around so they don't scratch your headstock.

Its a little trickier but you can cut the strings to length which will prevent the sctratching danger.

Page 3 of this document shows that very similar method but with trimmed strings

Andy can't reply just now. He's very busy this time of year.

Yes, I already did this over on the open mic, but a great gag like this deserves a wider audience.

Thanks MM,
I'm glad my rather amateurish videos helped.

As regards the string cutting thing - it is, of course, a personal choice ... with hex core strings.

I choose not to cut but I thread the tails with sme care. I've been using my method since 1999 and haven't caused any noticeable damage as yet.

Tails CAN be dangerous to unprotected eyes, so beaware, wear specs, but take care.

Longjohns, I do NOT play a black cutaway guitar, nor do I wear a red onesy!

I just got a slot head 12 string! Lucky it's my third slot head. Getting better at it, but not really pro yet.

Your video was a great help. I noticed you positioned your guitar to hang over your bench giving you room to use the electric screw gun. That worked for me as well and tightening up the strings was a snap, once I saw how it was done. The string length you mentioned also worked out perfectly for having just the right amount of windings on the machine head. Not too little, not too much...

Before watching your video I had all kinds of self doubt, but after watching it a couple of times, before I knew it the job was finished and looked great !!

I really like the idea of using a dentist's pick to get at the strings. I'm going to have to find one of those.

Thanks again !!
