Default A few Taylor guitar questions for you...

First of all, I am loving this 324! My gosh, I think I'm a convert!

So, why no bone saddles standard?
Is the 324 body the same as a 314 body?
Do they make a 624? I don't see it on their website.

Congrats on the guitar! What a beauty! Yes, that is the same as a 314, minus the mahogany top. From what I understand is that since Taylor cannot always get a consistent quality of bone material they go with tusq instead. Nope, they do not make a 624.

1 - Taylor believes that TUSQ saddles are more consistent when used on a guitar with electronics. Obviously they are not going to keep one type of saddle for A/E and a different type for pure acoustic instruments.

Plus even if they save $1/guitar that still adds up to hundreds of thousands per year.

2 - yes. The 2 indicates "alternative" top material, generally mahogany, the only difference between a 314 and 324 should be the top wood.

3 - don't know

No bone saddle because they want you to buy a bone saddle from the Taylor online store
But AZLiberty is correct. I did buy a bone saddle for my Taylor and I think it was an improvent. The 324's are great sounding guitars enjoy

If I had to guess, Taylor (and perhaps others) use Tusq because it's predictable and consistent. Bone could vary in density and that would add one more variable/obstacle in making a particular model of guitar with consistent sound. You can get bone saddles from Taylor and other places. -Not hard to fit to size and install.

Nice guitar you got... Enjoy.

They're web site says the saddle must be sanded for height. Anyone know how much?

If your happy with the height of your current tusq saddle just match the bone saddle to that height.

...snipped image of beautiful guitar!...
Congratulations on a beautiful guitar!
  • Taylor really "walks the walk" when it comes to Tusq & Micarta! (Even their upper-end production guitars come with these nuts/saddles). They might just think their guitars voice better with man made saddles & nuts. (Also, they might secretly believe bone is like the Emperor's new clothes...Who knows?...I'm not convinced that's not the case myself ). BTW, you can order any Taylor with the "Performance Package" for +$400 retail. This package provides bone nut/saddle + Gotoh 510 tuners + Adirondack bracing.
  • All XX4 guitars have the GA body shape.
  • A 624 would be a custom order (if they'd build it?), and would have a Mahogany top and Maple B/S. I have never heard of this combination.

Regarding the saddle, I bet it's 50/50 on whether or not it is an improvement. Improvement is subjective. My GS6 has tusq and the 516 micarta. I may buy a couple of bone saddles for an inexpensive experiment, but I'm certainly not motivated by a shortfall with how they currently perform

I'm not sure if the OP means mahogany top on a maple back/sides or maple top. Not sure if they'd do a maple topped acoustic. No clue how a mahogany top would sound with maple back/sides. Either could be interesting...or horrible.

I bet you're right. All maple. I do not see maple listed as a top wood option on the site, so one would need to inquire through a dealer.

If they offered maple as a top wood, then it wouldn't be long before somebody custom ordered a 666: maple top, back, sides 12-string in the GS body shape just for the model number.

When I said 624, I didn't understand the numbers. I meant a 600 series with the same body shape as my 324.
