My wife prefers it when I sing to when I don't. My main focus is my playing, and singing is just something I do occasionally. However, she can relate much more to pieces with singing than pure instrumentals, and I don't think she's alone in this view from non-players. Fingerstyle acoustic guitar-playing is, to put it politely, an "acquired taste"!
