He's not getting his "own TV show".

He will be featured, among other craftspeople, in an episode of "Handcrafted America".

The episode of “Handcrafted America” featuring Wayne Henderson will air at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, on the INSP network.

From the article:

Quote:
There’s a 10-year waiting list to get one of his guitars.

Henderson says a new guitar starts at about $2,000 to $3,000. But they can sell second-hand in shops for $40,000 to $50,000 or more.
Any wonder why the 10 year wait?

It speaks volumes for his integrity that the finest guitar builder in the US can make a living selling his instruments for only $2000 - $3000.

Hi Mike,
Wayne has his own way of going about things: he works in no particular order.

I've known folk who didn't wait long. Others are still "on the list."

I know there are those who are more acquainted with Wayne than I, but IMO the "waiting list" is more about "need". True musicians who perform professionally and break their main guitar and therefore need a new replacement can have one in a matter of weeks. Someone like Brad Paisley has plenty of back up so he waits. Record company execs who collect and or rarely play have been waiting more than 10 years and may never get one (IMO). If you commissioned one from Wayne, you'll get it when he realizes you really need it.

Again this is my take from limited time/contact with him and his daughter Jane, so opinions may differ.

John

He's a retired US Postman who probably doesn't need to work or sell guitars so guitar building for him is about relationships (specifically friendships) not "the buyer." My opinion is that if he thinks of you as "the buyer" rather than a friend, your guitar will be a long time coming. Note, he either gives them away to people who do favors for him (Vince Gill playing at 2014 Wayne fest) or charges around the few thousand noted above. If he was about "the builder and the buyer mentality" he, not the after market music store, would be selling them for 30-50K. He's about friendship, so when he realizes you need one, he does you the favor of building you one and giving it to you at an awesome price. IMO "commissioning" a guitar from Wayne as a "buyer" is likely to be drawn out and possibly frustrating experience as you will likely bring a business mentality to it. If you get a guitar you asked for from your friend Wayne, it's likely to be a fun filled and enjoyable journey. No offence intended to Mr.super fox as you may get it, but if you don't understand the difference between being a "buyer" of his versus a "friend" of his, he probably is not the guy to commission a guitar from. No offence intended to Wayne or any of his friends or buyers here, just my take on the length of the "waiting list."

John

Default Nice segment for time alotted

Caught the segment last night and enjoyed it for the sound bite format dictated by the show. Was hoping for a more in depth feature but format did not allow such. Maybe Ken Burns of "Civil War" and "Baseball" fame will do one on "Guitar Lutherie" and spend more time documenting and honoring the great talent out there and the interesting intricacies of the process.
