Default NGD - Second in a week

Now this one is quite special...

I've a friend who's a hobby luthier. For a while we've talked about him making me a guitar (normally he only makes them for his own pleasure, then occasionally sells them on). Finally we sat down, worked it all out, and the parts were purchased.

Construction started in November, and yesterday I picked up this beauty.

Based on a Martin 00/000 shape, with a slightly reduced upper bout. It's about the footprint of a 000, but slightly deeper, with a small bevel to make it more comfortable.

French Walnut B&S (with soundport)
European Spruce top with Burr Walnut soundhole ring
Mahogany neck (shaped very similar to a Martin modified low oval, 1 3/4 nut)
Ebony fingerboard and bevel
Fenland Bog Oak Bridge and headstock facing (I come from the Fenland area, and wanted something to tie in to that)
Gotoh 510 tuners
Schatten HFN Active VT pickup

It's still settling in, but it sounds big, much bigger than I expected. It's very rich, deep bass, good mids and a sweet treble. I'll give it a couple of weeks then let him set it up again, I'd like the action a bit lower...

The soundport was something I'd never tried - can't believe what a difference it makes to hear what you're playing in that way.

Only briefly tried the pickup but was hugely impressed - through his acoustic amp it sounded like the guitar, not quite mic'ed but very, very close.

This guitar is special - it's to my design, my specs... The 'S' inlay in the headstock is for Simon (that's me) and inside he's engraved my initials on the neck block. The fact it sounds fine... I'm kinda speechless...

That’s a cool guitar. I appreciate how spartan is, sort of utilitarian…everything you need and nothing you don’t. Can you post an image of the arm bevel?

That is nice. I want one.

No, serious, how much for him to build one.

I can relate to your joy, JustMunkee.
A good friend of mine built me a guitar about a year ago under very similar circumstances.

Mine is a one of a kind Dred shaped guitar built with an Adirondack top and Zebrawood sides and back.

He built it to my specs and the goal was to have a balanced sound that still emphasized the bass response.

There is something special about a personal/custom built guitar
I love mine as I hope you do yours.
