Well I have no clue what GC may do. BUT
we seem to be comparing apples to kumquats here ..
To clarify the "consignment agreement " for authors to get their new books into book stores, is nothing like the prototypical consignment fee for stores to sell used items like guitars.
The book store deal is basically an adaptation of a wholesale/retail agreement between the author and the bookstore , where the author fronts the cost of the inventory and does not get paid until the books sell , and thus while technically the author is said to be "consigning" the inventory to the bookstore, it is in practical terms more of a wholesale/retail situation, where 40% to 50% (50% also called Keystone) is the normal retail markup. So in that situation 40% is not out of line or unusual
But that is a completely different situation than consigning your used Martin for sale in a guitar store where the typical consignment fees are 10%-20%.

So yes given bookstores markup is usually 50% when they outright purchase, the 40% is not out of line at all .

Yes, you are absolutely right. It was an off handed unthinking one sentence comment I made that gained a lot of traction for some reason and I wish I hadn't even gone there. But I did, and it it there for everyone to pounce on now. I hoped it would get lost somewhere but then I got called out for misinformation and felt obligated to explain. My second mistake. Sorry to everyone who took it for more than I intended it to be.

It’s taken almost a lifetime for me to read the signs of bad service and to know when I should walk away. Life’s to short to deal with them.
