suggestion for improving?
Hi everyone!
I have been playing guitar off and on for about 10 years, just singing and playing chords. I recently purchased a Taylor 214 (MY FIRST TAYLOR!!!) and I really want to improve my playing abilities to get more out of a fine instrument...any suggestions (books, videos, etc)? Thanks!

thank you for the link! one more question...should i consider taking guitar lessons from the local pro shop? if yes, what should i look for in terms of a teacher, what questions should i be asking? i am not trying to be the next eric clapton, but i do want to move beyond simply playing chords to be able to play some solos, songs, different styles, etc.

if you want to learn to fingerpick and eventually start playing fingerstyle solos you might want to go to
www.accentonmusic.com and get The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking and The Art of Solo Fingerpicking surprise, surprise, surprise....

I agree with MapleTrees. I HIGHLY recommend the Mark Hanson series. Each costs about $20. The best laid out instructional material for fingerstyle guitar I have ever come across.
Another great site for instructional material is Stefan Grossman's site-huge number of DVD and video instructional materials. (I recommend John Miller's DVD's). http://guitarvideos.com/ Re; lessons, it depends on if you have a good instructor in your area or not. Being a good guitarist does not mean you are a good teacher. They just show you a few chords and some songs, or do they really try to find out what you want to learn? Do they have an organized way of teaching you and really take the TIME to be sure you are playing correctly-sugestions about timing, about how to maxamize your practice time, what to work on, how to do those chord changes and right hand techniques, etc.? Unfortunately it has been my expereince that good teachers are rare.
