Tuning Gears Recommendations--
---That won't break the bank.
I bought a cheap Ibanez model AC340. I wanted something for playing sitting on the couch, outside on the porch, campfire parties and so on. It actually is a pretty decent guitar. 1-3/4 nut, 2-1/4 string spacing at the bridge, pretty comfortable neck and not a bad sounding guitar, but the tuners are crap. The guitar was only $300, so I do not want to spend a ton of money for tuners, but would like to get something that holds tuning better, so looking for recommendations. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Sealed gear tuners like Grover Rotomatics - go for 18:1 ratio - make sure the locating screw is in the same position and not at 6 o'clock.https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-ha...ies-33-tuners/ For a little more money Gotoh tuners are even better.

It might be useful to post a photograph of your Ibanez tuners.
When you are searching for replacement tuners, pay close attention to diameter of the six tuner holes in the headstock. Any adjustment there will add to the cost. |

OP could be chasing ghosts. Tuners don't 'slip' hardly at all. But all that wood in a guitar expands and shrinks with temperature and humidity changes. No matter what tuners OP installs, that guitar will change its tune all by itself.

I think those actually come with decent tuning machines. I’d lube the nut slots first.

I did that in the post above yours.

OP posted a picture of his guitar's enclosed tuners. I've found no-name tuners from a series of different sources to be useful and problem-free. Fancy, no. But not noticeably different from Grover Rotomatics I've used. Side by side, I can't see a whole lot of difference. And guitars need to be tuned every time they come off the stand or out of the case. Normal.

I would only add, as others have implied - find a set of tuners that will drop into the existing peghead without modifying it, and save the original tuners. When you decide to part with the guitar you can swap the tuners back to the originals and keep the better tuners.
But as Peter said, often it is something other than the tuners that is causing the problem. |

THIS! It’s a source of constant astonishment to me that people frequently fail to understand the physics. They don’t build a guitar that stays perfectly in tune all the time. The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

Describe the problem you're having. Tuners don't generally slip. I own nearly 50 instruments with tuners and have never had a tuner that slips. Better tuners will operate more smoothly and have a better gear ratio allowing you to dial in more accurately. That's what you pay for with better tuners.
