They REALLY want that inexpensive guitar but don't dare admit ownership of it unless they tag it as their couch guitar...others call it a "beater"....recently I've seen the term "throw-away" surface.
Me, I just call it my guitar.

Couch guitar...not guitar couch.

Quite simply, a couch guitar is one that you can sit back on your overstuffed couch and play comfortably.
For some it's a parlor. Some use a GS mini. Some a 00.
I can play my dreads on the couch...provided I sit on the edge and upright. If I get comfy, I prefer my GS mini.

A "couch guitar" is an excuse to buy another guitar, along with a "campfire" guitar, a "fingerstyle" guitar, a "strummer", ect.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but there was a day when Ovations were considered the ultimate couch accessory.

OK Oldguy. I'm tryin'to put some chords to your song there, but I just can't make it scan, even using my best Bob Dylan phrasing.

You're gonna have to re-write that if w're gonna make a hit record !

I didn't know some people designated certain guitars as 'couch guitars' - My guitars are all like that. I probably spent upwards to 10 hours a day playing sometimes, because whether I'm working at my desk, on a couch, in bed, or pretty much anywhere, I always have a guitar on me at home. It's just habitual to constantly play for me, even if it's random notes and chords.

Challenge accepted!

I got an old guitar, called a double-O,
I play it on my couch, and I love it so.
It sounds like angels singin'
Yeah, its tone is sugar sweet!
