From Bob Dylans "Things Have Changed"

"Feel like fallin' in love with the first woman I meet
Puttin' her in a wheel barrow and wheelin' her down the street"

I tried that last week and it didn't work to well.

Those words stuck out in my mind like a porcupine in a nudist colony. That's still my favorite song of all time too.
It's a neat paradox. We steal things, but we rob people. I think the line is meant to suggest that although she was a thief, she never wanted to hurt other people through her actions - a sort of outlaw with a heart of gold.

Anyone else here old enough to have played "drop the needle" on vinyl 45s and albums over and over trying to figure out lyrics?

"Tell 'em all hookah smoking caterpillar has given you the call". Of course this was from White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane in the acid 60s so it makes sense.

Ozzy and Black Sabbath: "Visions cupped within a flower, deadly petals with strange power. Faces shine a deadly smile, look upon you at your trial, etc. It took me a long time to figure that out.

This thread points out that in rock, lyrics are secondary.

Ha ha .... you guys aren`t even close!
Try EVERY song from Yes with lyrics by Jon Anderson.
`Yesteday a morning came, a smile upon your face, Ceasars Palace morning glory see the human race, on a sailing ship to nowhere leaving any place, if the summer changed to winter, yours is no, yours is no disgrace`..... and it only gets more obscure after that!

Okay, I definitely agree with this one!

Sudden caution shouldn’t take away the startled memory
All in all, the journey takes you all the way
As apart from any reality that you’ve ever seen and known
Guessing problems only to deceive the mention

Passing paths that climb halfway into the void
As we cross from the side to side
We hear the total mass retain

Huh??

Agreed, but it's still a ear-catching twist of words. There are a few cryptic lyrics in that one.

And how about the lyrics to "Badge"? There's probably some esoteric meaning there, somewhere.

Sometimes esoteric meaning. More likely heavy duty drug use. ☺

But the line below confuses me.

"I swear By the mud below my feet, you can't raise a Cain back up when he's in defeat."

Kinda sounds like once you a defeat Cain ( Not necessarily Kill Him), you win, he ain't gonna ever recover, or won't be worth anything from then on. He not just telling you that, He's making you a promise about it. "You defeat me, I'm Done".

Dan
I think he is saying his brother is dead. "A Yankee laid him in his grave". So you can't raise him up. It also could be a play on words- "Raising Cain".

A Beatles song that really makes me shake my head is "Run For Your Life". Really catchy tune but talking about killing the girl if she goes out with someone else. What on earth could John have been thinking when he wrote that?

My take is that he's using a bit of poetic license to say the South has lost, he lost his brother, and at the time, he's feeling that it's going to be really hard to recover from it.

stairway to heaven. I always just accepted it, and thought they were just sooo cool or high. . but I read a book and they were talking about how they just passed off sections of the song to people to find something that rhymed.

suuuch a disappointment.

And the debate will rage on beyond the end of time just what 'American Pie' was REALLY about!
