Got my new baby- '95 555/12
Looks new, costs half new. Can't frown on that.
The top sure doesn't look like the prisitine sitka used on the current 500s; actually it rather resembles the cedar of my '97 714. Was Taylor using cedar on their 500 guitars in 1995? As I generally prefer the cedar topped Taylors, that would explain why this one's sound won me over so quickly. Just like when I bought my first Taylor (my 714), from the first chord I knew that the guitar would be going home with me that day. |

Cool. Gotta love those Taylor 12s!
It's unlikely that the 555 has a cedar top, as I don't think Taylor has ever used that combination. More likely, the spruce has just darkened over time, as Sitka will do. If the guitar was played outdoors a lot, that would speed the darkening along. Also, bear in mind that the current 500s have Engelmann tops, which is a lot lighter than Sitka even when new. The 514 has a cedar top, BTW.

excellent- thanks!
Thanks for the info- the colour matches my cedar guitar almost perfectly but the grain pattern was different. The sound also had me wondering- it's not as bright as most Taylors I've played; it's more of a subdued shimmer that's very smooth and clean. I like it

I'm not surprised about the tone. Most guitars will "warm up" as they age, and they more they're played, the faster this is likely to happen. It sounds like you got yourself a great guitar. Congrats!
