Default The buggies regret you have as a guitarist

What do you regret doing as a guitarist?

For me I was very young and had a great chance to learn from my grandfather who has been playing since he was 7. My parents got me a cheap acoustic and set up times for me to visit him. I went to one lesson and told my parents I was not interested and gave up because it hurt my hands. My parents tried to force on me and I ended up breaking the guitar to get out of lessons. Who knew 7 years later at the age of 18 I would be bugging to visit my grandfather and he wanted nothing to do with me as he still did not take me seriously. I now been playing for ten years and my grandfather still brings it up but he does jam and teach me some jazz standards from time to time. But I think to my self if I had a extra 7 years of jazz classes where would I be today?

That's my biggest regret, what's yours?

I picked up the guitar when I was 18 - played the viola from 4th grade (9 years old) until the end of college - and took some piano lessons, too. Wish I had started on the guitar at age 9...

It's so easy to have regrets. In my early teens, I had a wonderful teacher...better than I ever understood. I quit way too early. Later, I gave it all up for about 20 years...then learned that available instructional materials were so much better. Live and learn.

I started playing around with guitars about 42 years ago. About 2 years in I got to play a 12-string and fell in love with the sound. I bought a series of cheap and nasty 12-string guitars over the years that largely sat around unloved and unplayed. I sold my nasty guitar for $80 and bought a Maton 12-string. Not fantastic but it did renew my interest so I ordered a much higher spec Maton 12-string. While it was being made I shipped a used Taylor 355 from the USA. The Maton was delivered ..... huge disappointment. Absolutely no depth or tone or volume, kinda like an electric guitar unplugged! The used Taylor 355 killed it acoustically. Then I landed a used Guild F-412 and suddenly the Taylor sounded thin. Sold the Maton and found a Martin Grand J12-40E Special. Wow, I feel really, really priviliged to own this guitar.
So I guess I wish I`d just bought a really nice, quality 12-string guitar right from the beginning. Something like a Guild F-512?

My biggest regret is I was a bassist for 20 years before I even considered guitar! J/K I have no regrets about my musical journey. I think if I had started on guitar I would've gotten frustrated and given up. I DO wish I'd partied less and applied myself more in college (I was a music major...), but it got me where I am now in life w/ an awesome wife and 4 beautiful kids, and THAT I wouldn't change for the world!

Selling a Martin D35 12 string. It had a broken truss rod and I thought it was trash. If I only knew then what I know now!!!!

I don't think I have any real regrets but I will say that when I started out playing I wish that I wouldn't have been intimidated by better players (I was shy). I could have learned more by playing with others better than me.

Dru beat me to it. I have missed so many opportunities by being afraid to play with better players. Just get in there and play; they'll respect you more if you at least try.

No regrets from me. I enjoy myself and will never be great so I just have fun. It isn't my career or anything so I find a nice escape from stress playing and that is really what I look for from guitar.

Not really a regret, but I wish I had started when I was young. As Satchel Page said, I will do my best with what time I have left.
