712 vs 714 ?? 1 7/8 vs 1 3/4
Just a question for those more in the know....
Is there a big enough difference to get a 712 cedar with 1 7/8 neck when I have a 714 cedar 1 3/4 I ONLY fingerpick... I like the size of my Big Baby more than the 714 HELP !!!! thanks

I had a 312ce, and i thought it was a great fingerpickin guitar. I dont think you can go wrong with either one. I've never played a Taylor I didn't like

I bought Tim's 312CE, and it is the best sounding small-body guitar I have ever heard. I'm going to sell it and order one with a 1 11/16" neck, but the body size is no problem at all; the sound is huge. The x12 series guitars are a little larger than many people realize; they are the same overall length as a Martin dreadnought and only 5/8" less wide and 3/4" less deep. They are thus plenty large enough to give a big acoustic sound, and they certainly do give it. I much prefer the sound to that of a dread. The x14 series is actually a little longer and a little wider than a Martin dread, although not quite as deep (by 1/4"). There are other differences, of course; dreadnought bodies have a different shape, but the x12 is more than large enough to give a great acoustic sound.

BIG difference between a 714 and a 712. I don't have a 712 but I have a 912 and while the top is englemann on the 912, I have a cedar 714. The sound is fuller in the 714 and there is a cleaner sound to the 912. I play both guitars daily and if I had to choose just one....not sure I could do it...they both have unique qualities. I only fingerpick my Taylors. The x12 and x14 are as different as night and day, apples and oranges BUT both have that Taylor tonal quality. I do think you will find an 712 more satisfying than a Big Baby.....

I've never made the direct comparison that you are asking but I have a 514ce (cedar) that I'm very fond and a 814ce (sitka top). I recently acquired a 712ce Engelman top (I have also played a 712ce with a Sitka top). My experience is that the 12 and the 14 have different sounds. I like the size of the 12 for fingerpicking, very easy to get around, a surprising amount of sound for the size of the guitar. With the guitars I've played the bass may be prominent with the 12's. I would love to play a 12 with a cedar top for comparison. But I haven't run into one yet.

Very big difference. You need a 12! I would futhermore recomend getting it with a 2 and 3/8 bridge space if you're going to be using it as your fingerstyle only guitar. That, with 1 7/8 nut is just amazing.

I won't get a 712 without a 1 7/8 neck...
does a 1 7/8 neck mean it has a bigger bridge or is that a specail order???????? hoping the 712 will still have the great sound of my 714 again, thanks to everyone for the input

I think the 712 will have all the sound you want. Actually, I have never A-B'd the 712 and 714; I am just a big fan of the x12 series. I think they are great sounding guitars; the x14's are different, but not better, IMO.
