First guitar for a 5 year old
My 5 year old has been showing some interest in playing the guitar. I took him to Guitar Center today to see what fit him best. He seemed to like the Martin Ed Sheeran model best. I didn't really like the price tag for a first guitar for him. I want to encourage his playing. I just don't want to spent $600.00 on a first guitar for him. Does anyone have any suggestions for good or maybe underrated started guitars? I'm definitely thinking of going with a used one. If I were to buy new I would certainly use an AGF sponsor to buy from. Any comments or advice are welcome. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Baby Taylor, or one of the uke-guitars (Yamaha, Cordoba) if that's too big...

Look at the Luna Safari's.
They have many designs. If you want to spend a little more they have a Safari with a solid spruce top for around $200 You may want to consider the one with nylon strings. Tim |

A Córdoba Mini would be a great guitar for a little guy. That is what I plan to get for my grandsons when they show interest in playing.

Toys R Us. First Act.
Kids change their minds like the wind. 3 kids, 6 grandchildren. Take my word for it The only thing is that there are exceptions. My youngest son is 21. Been playing basketball since the third grade. College senior now. But a third grader is mentally more defined than a 5 year old. Slow it down, let the kid be a kid.

I would get him a Yamaha JR1 Mini Folk Guitar. I see them on CL all the time, usually under $100.

I got my son a solid top mini Martin and tuned it to open D. He's got lots of other guitars to choose from but still picks up the mini me from time to time.

Just this past weekend I got my 7 year old a Cordoba Concert sized Ukulele. He's super excited about it. He initially wanted a guitar at first but eventually decided to go with the Ukulele since it's small and will be so easy to carry around and bring with us on vacation. He also still has my guitars he can play with when ever he wants.
The other benefit is, I really love playing the Ukulele myself! |

I would highly recommend a ukulele for a 5 year old. I teach some 7 year olds and it's really hard for them even with a small guitar, a baby Taylor or the Martin are just too big for someone that age. He would get a lot more out of a ukulele
If you do get a guitar get a very small guitar with with nylon strings |

I started my daughter off with a Baby Taylor when she was 5. Thinking, if she didn't stick with it I could keep it for myself or easily sell it without much of a loss. 14 years later she's still playing and continues to thank me for getting her started.
Good luck

I'd start him on a uke. Fun sound, size and cost. Just play him some 21 Pilots for some inspiration. All the cool kids are doing it. A nylon classical might be your next step. Easy on the fingers which is the main hurdle for beginners.

Baritone uke is tuned DGBE like the high four strings on a guitar, and decent ones can be had for under $100. That way he can follow your chord shapes as he learns. Four nylon strings are much easier for little hands than six strings.

Seems like an X7 would snuggle right into that lap of his.
Green one would be best.
