Default NGD: 2016 Martin D-28 Authentic 1937 VTS

I'm actually shaking a little from excitement as I type this. I am finally getting my "dream guitar". Thanks to a forum member who purchased my beautiful Martin D-28 Marquis, I am bringing you a preview of my incoming new guitar. It should arrive next week on my birthday. I'm a few years late on celebrating a milestone birthday, but better late than never.

This is the standard spec from the Martin website. I spent a good deal of time searching online for the wood grain that I like. There were several lovely in-stock models available from My Favorite Guitars and Elderly. Maury and Ted were sold out.

However, Ted did sell me a new Eastman E20D, which is now my gigging guitar. Since I planned to trade up to my dream guitar, I needed something I could take to bars. Shout out to Eastman. They build a helluva guitar for the price. I guess this makes it a two-for NGD. I sold two high end guitars that I was afraid to gig with and bought a higher end guitar and a working man's guitar. In my twisted head, this makes sense.

I'm told it's luck of the draw on the appearance of the woods after VTS treatment. So, I didn't want to order sight unseen.

The woods on MFG Jon's, in stock, '37 in look very very nice. Creamy even colored top. It was my first choice, until I ran across this one, which, in its unique way, fits my eye better. Sorry Jon, but I hope this plug helps! Someone should jump on Jon's '37. Honestly.

While I eagerly await its arrival, I am looking into pickup options. It will likely be a Trance MVT system from Maury (I hope it fits on the bridge plate). Otherwise, I'll install a trusty K&K pre-phase system from John at Shoreline.

(Have you noticed that I'm hoping to win an award for the most sponsor mentions in one NGD. Truth be told, I wish I could order a guitar from every one of them. They are all so helpful with my silly questions. But, since this is probably my last Martin Dreadnought purchase, and, with luck, my "lifetime" guitar, I probably won't be buying guitars for a while.)

The photos below are property of Willcutt guitars. I will post my own in due time.

Thanks guys! Still a little giddy. I imagine the 24 hour wait to open the box is going to be torture when it arrives.

That back is some of the best Madagascar I've seen.

And that top is really attractive. I like the even spread of the darken grain, which is not typically showing up on the VTS tops, unfortunately. Yours is a great one!

Thanks! I'm trying not to be hyperbolic. I can't say I've seen that many (any) 30s D-28s, but if you told me that back was old Brazilian, I'd probably believe you.

Great comparison. I honestly like yours better than the authentic "authentic." :-). But, that Brazilian is beautiful. I found a really beautiful back and sides, but the top was a bit odd. So, I kept looking. Glad I did!

Dave,

You not only got beautiful rosewood, but the favorite VTS I've seen. If it looks in person the way those photos show, you win the VTS prize!

Dave
