Default GS Mini: Spruce v. Mahogany v. Koa v. Engelmann

*Referring to the top woods.

It's now 08/2016 and all variations have been out for some time now, so I'm assuming we've all tried at least 3 out of the 4 (I've never tried the Engelmann Holden Village).

I'm going to have to give the nod to Mahogany. Spruce is definitely the loudest. I wanted to like the Koa, but the sound doesn't match the looks. Your thoughts / favorite?

I bought the spruce top / rosewood model. I didn't care for the mahogany or koa as much, but they are nice. I'm not sure any of these can compete with a standard sized guitar. But, they certain have their advantages in comparison to other travel sized instruments.

We've owned both the spruce top and the mahogany top versions. There was a definite preference for the mahogany. It sounded almost as good as a 322 / 324 at roughly one-third the price.

Koa is pretty, but in the Mini it does not shine tonally as expected (to my ears, and I really LIKE koa).

Nice. I've had the spruce before, but I sold it and just have the mahogany now.

Tried both the spruce and mahogany. Liked both. Bought the spruce.

The one koa I tried did not sound as good as either the spruce or mahogany. I went with mahogany because the particular one in the store had a pretty striped look and I thought in the long run it might be a bit more rugged than spruce (mahogany is about 1/3 Janka harder than spruce).

I've played them all and, to me, the mahogany sounds better than any of the others...much warmer.

Which is why I own one.

It seems our preferences for tops on GS Minis mirrors our preferences for anything else. They sell all the options because everyone likes different things.

Yeah. No doubt. Nice representation for Engelmann.

I love my mahogany GS. But I found a ridiculously gorgeous Koa copy earlier this year that has amazing tone.

BTW, I don't think they are offered in Englemann.
