Default Another archtop buy

Have my eyes on a 1938 Gibson L5 @ Lark St Music,5900.00. no pick guard,some play wear ,where pickguard was,structure is sound,currently I have a Deluxe Campellone all acoustic do I spring for an old L5?

A 30's L5 is it's own thing, it'll definitely be different enough from your Campellone to warrant having another archtop (and what an archtop it is!)...if you got the scratch, that's certainly not a terrible price...

As an electric player I would prefer the newer L5s but there is something to be said for the acoustic sound of a guitar from that era. Old prewar Gibson and Epiphone archtops are some of the best sounding (acoustically speaking) archtops around.

Got the 38 L5 a few days ago,great sound, having my luthier put correct period pickguard on and set up......

FYI: anyone who lives in the NYC area,I have a great luthier Rocco Monterosso, he is on Staten Island.20 years experience...

I hope you'll post with pictures and your impressions. I basically cyberstalk every pre-1950 acoustic archtop that goes on sale online, so I'd seen that listing for a while.

I ended up picking up the 1939 L-5N at Schoenberg Guitars instead, but I kept checking back about that one.

I'd love to know whether it's x-braced or parallel, and what the scale length is. Also, you should send pictures and info on the guitar when you get it to http://www.prewargibsonl-5.com/

Campus, it`s listed on the prewar L5 site, serial #94390, I am having a period pickguard put on and a bridge setup.It is X braced,adi top....Cheers..PS it sounds great...
