Default a nice little Christmas gift surprise

One of my engineers is a wood-turner. He makes bowls and such and they look really nice. He is also a very analytical materials engineer so very precise and methodical and consumed with the process as well as the product of his hobby.

We talk often about woods and I share guitar repair and luthiery stories.

He just gave me this turned pen which he made for me for Christmas out of East Indian Rosewood - at some point I think I told him my favorite guitar is EIR.

I love guitar-centric stuff so this was such a cool (and totally unexpected) gift.

Wow, nice gift, faz. The fellow obviously thinks highly of you. Given CITES, just don’t travel with it!

That pen is beautiful!

My oldest son is a manager at a local Navy installation. Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away he started at the facility by going through the apprenticeship program and training to be a machinist. He's still a machinist at heart, with a great feeling for materials and techniques. But I digress. When he was finishing up his apprenticeship, some wise instructor integrated some fun projects into the program. For my father, an engineer, my son turned a beautiful, two-inch round polished paperweight from brass rod stock with a rare quarter pressed into its face. For me, he turned a pen made from, South American marblewood (Zygia racemosa).

I love its chunky feel and profile.

Bob
