Could not disagree more - there's tons of great examples of acoustic and rock working well together -

1. Acoustic intro to Crazy on You - Heart.
2. Wish You Where Here - Pink Floyd - certainly one of the most heard / admired acoustic riffs around.
3. Tom Cochrane & Red Rider - use acoustic a fair bit.
4. Dust in the Wind - Kansas. Sure it was smaltzy, but great song.
5. Eagles - maybe you don't count this as "rock", but it ain't country.

But an interesting view nontheless.

You must have really hated these guys ... no wonder they never amounted to much ...

Not ONE but TWO acoustics

There are still a few of us in the world, however, who believe that a real acoustic guitar is one that cannot be plugged in ...

Love the Tele!

I'll bet you do. A blues/r&b/soul affair by any chance? OK then, the exception which proves the rule...
I cringe when he brings that out (usually after breaking a string), but Ross sounds great on anything, although he looks better with the LG-O,... you just don't expect such versatility and fluidity from an old brown acoustic box and as I said, the combination of the acoustic and electric is special, much more interesting texturally that two 'lectrics (so I continue to disagree).

Musically we ride the rails between Clarksdale, Memphis, Georgia and Tennessee, lot's of country in our blues, lot's of blues in our country.

Yeah, that John Lennon. Ruined some perfectly lovely tunes with that Gibson J-160E.

The Stones - what were they thinking - following up a masterpeice like "Satanic Majesties" with "Beggars." Then screwing up potential gems like "Dead Flowers," a perfectly good British hillbilly tune. If they gotta play a Gibson, I'll take Brian Jones' Firebird over Keef's Hummingbird any day.

Yeah, don't ya just hate it when someone throws an acoustic into a perfectly good rock band.

As long as I can hear acoustic guitar in "electric band" , I think is OK, but if acoustic guitar is there just for decor than I agree with you it shouldn't be there.

Hmmm... I think some posters may not have read too far beyond the title of the post...

The beef is specifically with live bands, not recorded music. You know the kind of thing; singer reaches for an acoustic, adds nothing of worth, all dynamism is sucked from the stage, etc.

The horror!

Fair enough You're a working band, and there's clearly a lot of integrity to your choice of instruments. As I admitted earlier, my argument is full of holes!

For instance, there's a friend of mine, Tom Baxter, who's one of the most kinetic, charismatic live performers I have seen, and an excellent guitarist to boot. On stage he plays nothing but a battered Lowden, even with a full band. His material just wouldn't work with an electric. His website has guitar tutorials, which is handy...

Not ONE but TWO acoustics
(a) They're miming; you can hear the electric guitar on the playback
(b) C'mon, that's a really lame look. It should be Harrison on Gretsch, and Lennon on Rick 325. With acoustics and those suits they look like a couple of office workers busking on their lunch break
(c) I'm from Liverpool, so by birth-right I can out-scouse you on all Beatles issues.

To the melody of "Gimme That Old Time Religion":

It was good enough for Elvis,
It was good enough for Elvis,
It was good enough for Elvis,
It's good enough for me!!

Gimme that rock and roll acoustic,
Gimme that rock and roll acoustic,
Gimme that rock and roll acoustic,
It's good enough for me!!

It was good for Buddy Holly,
It was good for Buddy Holly,
It was good for Buddy Holly,
It's good enough for me!!

Gimme that rock and roll acoustic,
Gimme that rock and roll acoustic,
Gimme that rock and roll acoustic,

I was wondering when someone was going to bring up Elvis. I'll take your acoustic Presley - and raise you this electric Elvis from the '68 Comeback Special:

No-one ever made a Hagstrom Viking look so drop-dead cool!

Buddy and Clapton? Strat men, surely. And The Beatles were probably still the Quarrymen at the time of that photo. I'll give you Los Lobos though...

Not much happening this time of day for an expat Brit in Phnom Penh, eh?

Okay, to counter your Hagstrom at Elvis's '68 Comeback Special (which I only ever saw in its entirety on Finnish television in Espoo, Finland, in 1981 - but that's another story,) I raise you with the Gibson L-5 that Elvis grabbed out of Scotty Moore's hands at that same concert:

We can actually both claim that one, since it had pickups on it, too....

Exceptionally cool axe, and a perfect fit for Elvis. Shall we split the pot?

Having seen Jethro Tull, I must emphatically say that such laws are made to be broken!

Back when I was going to rock concerts a lot, I got in free most of the time because I was a concert reviewer for a local arts magazine there in Kansas City.

Jethro Tull was one of very bands I paid to see, not only once, but several times! Great band, great music, incredible orchestration of acoustic with electric sounds.
