Again, sorry to sidetrack the thread, but any bulder input into my question about examples of Cocobolo that looks very very similar to ziricote..and those Mad RW sets that you don't see much of anymore?
All the cocobolo I'm familiar with has been very red, tight grained, rather than brownish and very wide grained with those dark ink like lines.

Hi Mary

The guitar was strung up before Healdsburg, but it was waiting safely at home for the case and set-up before shipping it out to the customer. Maybe next one I can bring a 12 string.

The other commissioned guitar was a jumbo 12-string (ziricote, adi spruce). The guitar's action hadn't been set up yet, but it was very playable. To say this guitar was stunning both visually and tonally would be an understatement. The voice is strong, open and well-balanced. I'd love to hear it after it has a few days of play time on it. I still haven't found the right 12-string for me from any of the major manufacturers, but I think this Osthoff is extremely close to what I would want.
I actually only had 80/20 lights when I strung it up and although the guitar was originally really bright, even with those strings it had "mellowed" quite a bit since it was first strung up. It was not janglely at all. I think with a little string experimentation (a personal thing I know) it could really be dialed in to an individual's taste. I was happy with it and I know the owner is thrilled. The owner originally wanted to use Brazilian, but since he already had Brazilian guitars, decided to try something a little different hence the ziricote. Although I try not to put too much stock in the initial review from a customer as they are in the "honeymoon stage," here is what he had to say:

Quote:
It is stunningly beautiful!!! The volume is perfect and the tone is just breathtaking. It's even better than I hoped. I don't think I suffered at all by going with the ziricote over brazilian.

Very nice work John. I only see 6 bridge pins. Do you put each string from the pairs in a single bridge pin hole>

Jeff,

I don't build too much with Cocobolo. I know some others love it, but it is not one of my favorites and I think the last one I made with cocobolo was in 2005? It did have some nice spider webbing and ink lines but not quite like to one Mary posted. Lance Krangenbrink builds with cocobolo quite a bit.

Thanks everyone else for the nice comments

Hi Andy,

This pic of the bridge from Kevin A's 12 string might answer your question - "semi-pinless"...Neat Design.

Aloha, Hen

My favorite guitar is addy over ziricote...made by Goodall. I wonder if this is an under-appreciated wood. I understand that it can be difficult to work with, but I think it's an excellent tone wood.

Interesting.
I've just never seen cocobolo with spiderwebbing like that.
Gorgeous.

Kevin, I wish I could have seen your 12-string ... might have even been fun to try and play (never tried a lefty 12).

John, I'm going to have to play one of your 12-strings one of these days.
