Default What are some of the more active (and good) bluegrass forums?

I'm getting back into acoustic guitar, and bluegrass in particular, after a 20, or so, year hiatus. Since then I've been playing swing jazz and traditional blues on electrics. I've been severely bitten by the bluegrass bug and running to get up to speed on acoustic guitars used in bluegrass. Any suggestions on good forums (aside from HG, that is)? Thank you.

Tom

Flatpicker Hangout is relatively new....but you'll be hard pressed to find a more hardcore bluegrass crowd.

You know, I haven't really found a bluegrass forum I liked. Flatpicker Hangout is too hardcore BG for my tastes - I think a lot of those guys are migrants from the Banjo Hangout. I've stopped going to the Bluegrass Forum because it's gotten political, and not all that busy there in any case. If you're enthusiastic about bluegrass and upset about Obama in equal measures though, you might enjoy it.

The one I've liked the best is Flatpick-L, which is a mailing list and not a web-based forum. Same general idea, though. It's a little cliquey, but there are well-known and well respected players on there, and they actually do talk about music from time. I still get it in digest form, though I'm no longer active on it.

Give The Bluegrass Guitar a look http://www.bluegrassguitar.com/index.html, it has a little bit of everything, and includes a list of artists with links to their web sites, a nice way to learn about who's who today.

As noted, the Forum dedicated to bluegrass on the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum ("The High Lonesome Sound") http://theunofficialmartinguitarforu...ome-Sound.html is fairly active and covers a wide range of discussions about the subject, no tabs.

Welcome to the dark side!!! That makes two this week who have admitted that they have been bitten by the bug!

You might also visit banjohangout.org ... none, of course, are as good as this one!!! There are also some grassers at the Blueridge forum. You might also enjoy reading The Bluegrass Blog

I don't want to hijack the thread, but since you mentioned swing jazz, you may want to listen to a group called The Toy Hearts. I saw them at a show Saturday, and Sophia Johnson put on the guitar workshop with Josh Williams. She said her two biggest influences were (are) Tony Rice and Django Reinhardt, and it makes for some great music ... The group includes two sisters and their dad, and they had a fiddle player from Paris, Raphael Maillet, who was superb, and comes from a swing jazz background ... and a friend of mine played bass for them. Their web site lists a different fiddle player, so I don't know if Raphael is permanent, or just joined them for the US tour. They will be in Austin Texas tomorrow, and then have several shows planned at IBMA ...

You can hear their two albums at Napster ... this link should get you there: Toy Hearts

Let me know what you think ...
