Default When you need a mandolin for the solo . . .

. . . but it's only you and your guitar. Cue up this perfect cover of the great Jimmy Webb "Lineman" tune by Colin Hay, and listen to the little walkdown with drone beginning at about the 2:23 mark.

Find it on your fretboard and play it. Which of your guitars sounds most mandolin-like when it's played?

In my tiny group, it's the Yamaha. But maybe it's the strings. I can only do it like Mr Hay using the D-18 or the LS-TA, and the D is strung with Authentics, while the Yamaha has Nanowebs.

This song has been on my radar since I stumbled across Rick Beato’s video of it recently. I’m really liking it. I’ll have to try picking with it on my mandolin.

When you need a mandolin for the solo . . .

Or you can use the unison strings on your 12 string, especially from the 5th fret up.

Be well and play well,

Don

Yes, exactly. Mandolins have wide intervals. This chord on a 12-string works for the mandolin D In Copperhead Road:

14
10
11
O
