Dumbest thing you've seen from a guitar maker
Not trying to make this nasty. Just those "Hunh?!" Moments
My example comes from one of my favorite big factory companies. Larrivee. Satin Finish Koa guitars... I'm not sure I would support it being a felony, but it is definitely a criminal misdemeanor act! |

I'll stick on Larrivee for a moment.. but to defend the satin finishes, they seem to project more than gloss finishes, but not near as pretty IMO. What I don't like about Larrivee guitars... let's see, not much, they have a good thing going.

My less than stellar custom build experience. (This was a "new" guitar)
Full disclosure: I was able to return it for a full refund. There were some structural flaws but it did sound great. |

"Fake Heritage" or taking on a name that's been dormant for several decades and implying in ones advertising that the brand has been in continuous existence since way back. Dead guy endorsements always make me go "Hunh?!", especially if the brand wasn't even around when the person was alive. Marketing hubris is also good for a "hunh?!" moment, something like the brand of imported guitars that had as it's slogan, "The rebirth of the acoustic guitar". Really? Hunh!

As cyclistbrian said:

Washburn even has a 125th anniversary model. That one really bugs me. Another thing that I think is a big mistake is the guitar companies that sell high quality guitars that they built their reputaion on, and also sell import guitars using the same name. The customer has to try to determine which is which. They should use a another name, remember Sigma/Martin, Olympia/Tacoma, you need a book to figure out what the heck a Breedlove is these days if you are buying, or as I recently was selling. I had to compete with their low priced guitars under the same name. |

On the local Craigslist awhile back, I saw something that might qualify. However, I'm sure Taylor asked the customer "Are you sure?" and proceeded.
You know how some left-handed folks will play a right-handed guitar upside down? Well, this guitar was meant to look like that. At its core it was a left-handed guitar, but the pick guard was placed on the top (bass side), as was the cutaway. So to the initiated, it looked like a right-handed guitar just turned upside down. However, it's not like a right-handed player could just turn it upside down and play. I wish I could dig up pictures of it--it was just odd. |

In a similar vein, you know what I absolutely hate? Phony "worn" guitars, like Fender's "Road Worn" series. Gibson has something similar. I'm sorry, but what kind of moron thinks that they can take a brand new guitar made in China or wherever, abuse the paint and knock a few dents in it, and that will give it "Mojo? Please! Personally, I don't buy the whole "mojo" thing in the first place, or at least not in the way it's (mis)used.
