Michael, you might try out a Martin 00-28VS. Doesn't have your desired cutaway but may give you some sense of a tonal palette that is quite stunning and not really like the Taylor models.

To me, 12 frets are all about the "power and the glory" so the itty-bitty ones don't appeal.

I love my Taylor 12-fret. It has a cutaway, extremely comfortable to play, and I love the sound. It feels like "home" when I play it.

I recently purchased the Taylor 812 12 fret, non-cutaway and not electrafried.

Love it, great feel and sounds great too!

Cool 12 fret

1 Newbie. Thanks for your response. I'm curious. Which model Taylor 12 fret do you have? Thanks to everyone for your responses.

Please keep those recommendations coming.

I have played a Taylor 712 12 fret without cutaway and really liked the sound. To my ears, it had more bass and mids and sounded "rich". Still, I really want a cutaway because I use those upper frets.

As others have mentioned the cutaway is going to polarize your searching - a lot of "traditional" 12-frets don't have a cutaway. For a more vintage/traditional tone, I'd be looking at a used Collings 0001 or a Martin 000-28VS. For modern, other folks have covered the Taylor bases, but you could also look at one of David Webber's guitars - you'd come in well under $2K used, and they are fantastic.

Please note, I cannot play a deep body. My shoulder doesn't like even the Taylor GA models with the 4 5/8 depth. And my wrist tells me to steer clear of necks with a V shape.
Thanks for your help in advance. michael s.
The Taylor Leo Kotke model was the best sounding 12 string I ever owned.

I use open tunings mostly on my 6 string acoustics and a 12 string is kind of a time consuming nightmare to keep changing tunings on.

So I eventually sold it.

But it was the best.

Default For something completely different

Try Larrivee. I have an older LS -03 12-fret that is killer. It is about the size of a classical, mahogany with an Italian spruce top, and can handle any type music I can throw at it. I'm fairly sure you can get new 12-fretters from several custom dealers for less than your budget and they are well finished, great sounding guitars.

JMO, but I own a Taylor 12 fret ss 522 non cutaway I purchased because I could not play my dread after a back surgery, now it's my only guitar, planned on selling it off when i recovered because i am not a Taylor person, but wouldn't sell this little guy now. Easiest playing guitar I have ever owned period, and it sounds good too.......

Here's some nice tone from a 12 fret cutaway.

Good example of how different a 12 fret can sound. Much more middy than the Taylor I own and much more of a "classic" acoustic tone. My Taylor is much more of a modern finger style sound.

Michael,

I have the 12 fret series from 2011 that Taylor introduced prior to offering the 812 12 fret. Below is a link to the model. I have the rosewood/sitka guitar.
