It seems to me I once checked into replacing the Gotohs with Waverlys and (as I recall) they are not a direct drop in replacement, there may be some work involved. It's something to be aware of. Good luck.

A good cleaning and luring may cure the Gotoh Blues. They're usually decent.

I have a D21 Special and indeed the tuners are a bit hard to turn and are a bit fussy. Not fussy enough to swap out the tuners though. Overall, a pretty nice guitar.
