Elixers are awesome

Guitar center has Martin Sps on sale on the websight-for $2-4 i never tried them, but normally it's a $14 set of strings, id buy a few packs of diffrent sized gages imo, I did
The caveat with Martin strings is that they seem to be made for bluegrass players. In the cheaper strings, even the 11's really cut thru the mix.
They feel very stiff under my fingers. They are very loud though.
While I have very little love for FMIC...I have to admit
Fender strings are also very good, though not terribly long lived.
I used to use them exclusively. (Based on the color of the ball ends--I bet D'Addario makes them.)
Dean Markely strings are also very good.
I used them for a while also. They are also all I cuuenrtly keep on hand for my 12-string.
I reiterate: spend $50 at Strings and Beyond or Just Strings. Experiment.
Have fun. Make music and enjoy it.

[QUOTE=Oldguy64;5109107.... take $50 and hit up Strings and Beyond. And pick a few different sets. Phosphor Bronze, 80/20, Monel, Nickel Bronze, aluminum bronze...try 11-52, 12-53, 12-54.

...YMMV.[/QUOTE]

That is great advice and is exactly what I did a month or so ago.

At the moment I'm in love with the sound of nickel bronze light strings. (on my Huss & Dalton).

I learned that I like the D'addario brand much more than the John Pearse brand, and the lower cost of the JPs wasn't sufficient to sway me.
I found the d'addario much more responsive. (hmmm, didn't check the gauge differences....)

I did notice in the last four packs I bought, the guage differences in Light String sets seemed to fall on the G and low E strings. I've got low Es ranging from .52 - .56 and a similar range in the G string.

I'm pretty much done with Elixer nanowebs although for a long time i wouldn't use anything else. When I switched to uncoated strings, I found a responsiveness and clarity that I hadn't realized I was missing.

There's a set of SIT brand strings on the bench to try next. They just sounded interesting.

"SIT’s well known Silencer series are produced with the "Inverse String Winding" process that compresses the outside of the wound strings without changing the core size or shape. This exclusive design leaves the string with a smooth feel that greatly lowers string noise while retaining a large round wound sound."

The three best things I did for stringing my guitar at home was to purchase:
an electric string winder and a neck rest block, and to bookmark the Taylor how to change strings video. I'm a wild woman now!

Martin Lifespan PB has more bass and developed mids than the stock Elixir or the excellent but neutral EJ16s. On a hog top this Martin combination works very well ...warm, deep and woody.

Retro strings are another option, but some may find the sound too dark.

I use olympia 80/20 12's. They are dirt cheap but for whatever reason I just love the sound they produce. They just seem to be a great match for my furch. I seem to be able to use them for months, which is impressive for an uncoated string. Im sure there are some people on here who have tried them and disliked, but all depends on the guitar imho. For 3-4 pounds a set they are certainly worth a try.

I think the recommendations you're getting are PB strings. I'd also give 80/20 strings a try. They'll be a bit brighter, but you have a mahogany guitar, and you're after a little twang, so 80/20s might be what you're after. If not, you'll know soon enough.

Both my mahogany guitars love DR Rares 12-54.
