Question traveling abroad with my guitar

Hi

Next month (July) i am flying to Canada with my best mate... we are hoping to take our guitars with us, to play some family concerts and have fun at campfires and so on...

anyway, traveling with guitars?? any advice... some people i have talked to have mentioned Gate-checking... what is this?? how damaging would it be in the hold?? can i carry it on (Air Canada)

any help would be much appreciated

Thanks
Sarah

What you're trying to avoid is the baggage handlers and conveyer system. Carry on is best, then gate checking. Loosen the strings a little, pad both sides of the headstock with newspaper and remove the end pin.

Mine seem to make it in the mail from LA to Wiesbaden ok.
