One possible use is as an Fm11b5--follow this with a Bbalt and an Ebm/maj7 and well...gosh darn, if that ain't lovely...

I can't tell you how many times I've heard chord shapes referred to as "grips." Heck, even my idol Jimmy Raney did. But I once attended a master class, where I asked a question about "grips," and the guy laughed at me! And no one else in the room defended me. Probably just a jerk. Oh well.

I don't know why someone playing country would gravitate towards E...unless they play a lot of Johnny Cash. I play probably 75% country, and will use drop D with the bottom string open on pretty much anything...not to mention that it and A are so easy to pick from.

Just a jerk. What would he call them, I wonder? If it's good enough for Jimmy Raney, it's good enough!!!!

The trick, of course, is that a grip is just a grip--it's always best to know why something works so you can get that sound again, anytime, anywhere on the neck.

Careful brother, that's a C6/9, minus sign means something else, and that Dm6 has an F# in in, so its major.
